When the Bahrain Irish Society was founded in 1975 one of the key drivers aside from promoting Irish Culture was donate to local charities and that is something that the Society has stayed committed to over the last 35 years. That commitment is as strong as ever and over BD 8,000 every year has been donated to local charities here in Bahrain. Below are a list of Charitable organizations that have received donations from the Irish Society in the past & some key messages.
Bahrain Cancer Society
Breast Cancer awareness campaign was launched in March 2006 with invitations sent out to over 50,000 women over the age of 40. Mammography machines have been made available in health centers across the Country.
Bahrain Society for Violence against Women
Bahrain signed the Violence against Women Agreement in 2002 however there is still a lot of work to be done in the Kingdom to totally eradicate the issues. The Society relies on charitable donations for funding and the Irish Society is keen to support the Women of Bahrain.
Friendships for the Blind
80% of people living with blindness are over 50. Three quarters of blindness is needless – it could have been prevented, treated or cured. Timely intervention can preserve sight so get your eyes tested today.
Helping Hands
Helping Hands was set up 7 years ago and only accepts donations of clothes, supplies or time not money. Last year the Irish Society purchased blankets for the migrant workers during the cold winter months.
Migrant Workers Protection Society
The Migrant Workers Protection Society was established to protect workers from abuse in the work place. It also helps with non- payment of salaries and works with the ministries to provide better working conditions for its members.
MOCEP
The Mother-Child Home Education Programme was set up to empower mothers with the skills to change attitudes whilst giving the child a jump start educationally before entering primary school.
Palm Association
Tthe Palm Association is made up of a committee of 11 ladies most expats who are dedicated to providing help and assistance to Bahraini families, women and children with the greatest need.
RIA
The Regional Institute of Active Learning was established in 1999 to cater for the needs of students with Autism who might otherwise fall through the cracks of the school system Its programmes have been expanded to other students with other learning and communication difficulties.
Salmanaiya Hospital (Children’s Ward)
Ward 222 in Salmanaiya hospital is the ward dedicated to children with chronic illnesses. Most of the parents of these children cannot afford private health care although the medical care is exceptional due to the dedication of the Doctors and Nurses. Always a good cause for the Irish Society to support.
BSPCA
Founded in 1979 and is dedicated to looking after abused, neglected and stray animals on the Island. The BSPCA has been a success due to the dedication of its volunteer workers and donations received from societies like the Bahrain Irish Society.
The Al Shamil Rehabilitation Centre
The Centre is dedicated to the education and care of disabled children here on the Island. It is a haven for children with disabilities with its large classrooms, colourful playground and pets. Its programs are diverse and uniquely set up for each child undergoing tests.
The Muqabah Charity Fund
Founded in 1998 collects Toys and Gifts for children in need in Bahrain. The Bahrain Irish Society launched their “Children for Eid” campaign in conjunction with the Muqabah “Make a Child Happy” campaign and collected a lot of gifts and Toys for needy children here in Bahrain. The intention is to make this an annual event in conjunction with the Muqabah Charity Fund.
The Bahrain Irish Society will continue to support its Charity work in 2010/11.
